Winter Holiday Model Train Show

N playing with trains.

We spent the day becoming more familiar with the world of model trains at the Winter Holiday Model Train Show at Turf Valley in Ellicott City. The show was $12 for families and kids were free.

We saw some nice photography, antiques, displays, etc. Although, for S and N the highlight of the day was the Thomas & Friends Play Area. They spent hours playing with trains and track sets. In my mind, I kept thinking they’re going to get bored soon and it will be time to go, but it never happened… never did.

I came to the conclusion right then and there, that model train shows are mostly for adults who are into collecting model trains (news flash, right?) and while the kids area provided tons of amusement for my kids, I was still left thinking where are all of the amazing train sets and displays that I’ve seen online and in books with the elaborately built cities and obsessive attention to detail? Maybe they save that for the larger shows?

All in all, we had a great day and we saw some decent displays. We also learned about Thomas Deluxe train sets for kids 8 years old and older, which we never would have known about had we not gone.

We had a nice time. It was fun to see N in his element, just having a blast!
